How Oral Surgeons Perform Dental Implants

When you have missing teeth, your confidence and even your ability to eat and talk properly can be impaired. Dental implants can replace your missing natural teeth with attractive, functional artificial ones. Implant surgery is performed on an outpatient basis by a specially trained dentist called an oral surgeon. The process involves several stages, and it can take anywhere from three to nine months or longer to complete. Much of the time is spent waiting for tissues to heal and healthy jawbone to grow. Following is a general outline of the implant placement process.

Dental Implant Process. To place an implant, the oral surgeon will make an incision into your gum tissue to expose the bone. A hole is drilled to make room for the metal post, which serves as the artificial tooth’s root. The post is implanted deep into the bone.

Placing the Abutment. The abutment is a small device that attaches to the crown of the artificial tooth. To place the abutment, your surgeon will reopen the gum, and attach the piece to the post. After the procedure, the site is allowed to heal for several weeks. When the site has healed, your surgeon can finally place your new artificial teeth. Depending on your needs, you may have a removable implant prosthesis or a permanent, fixed one.

Bone Grafts. Before a dental implant can be placed, you must have enough viable jawbone to support it. If the bone is too thin or soft, bone grafting may be required. The graft involves removing a portion of bone from another part of your body and transplanting it to your jaw. It may take up to nine months for the new bone to grow and stabilize. Oral surgeons are trained to handle this complicated procedure.

Osseointegration Timeline. Once the post is in place, you must wait for osseointegration to occur; during this process, your jawbone grows and bonds with the surface of the metal implant. The process may take as long as six months. Most oral surgeons will provide a temporary, removable denture to wear while you wait for the site to heal.

After dental implant surgery, you may experience swelling, bruising, pain, and minor bleeding. If your symptoms get worse in the first few days after your procedure, call your oral surgeon in Munster.
